Forest Grove (2-1, 0-1 Pacific Conference) at McMinnville (3-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. Sept. 20: Zac Collins says it's a game the Vikings must win. To do so, they'll have to slow down the player Ethan Thursam calls the best quarterback in the Pacific Conference.
Forest Grove travels to McMinnville on Friday to face third-year starter Gage Gubrud and the Grizzlies. It's a matchup the Vikings lost 55-6 almost a year ago to the day.
Robin Hill, who led Sprague to 20 playoff appearances in 25 seasons before heading to McMinnville in February, said before the season that Gubrud is among the most talented players he's coached. The quarterback has done nothing to disappoint with four touchdown passes and four touchdown runs as the Grizzlies have outscored their first three opponents 132-50.
"He's just an athlete," Thursam said of Gubrud. "Every sport he plays, he's pretty dominant."
Collins and Thursam are key pieces in a Vikings offense that was lighting up the scoreboard before suddenly going silent last week. Forest Grove put up 84 points in victories over Class 5A opponents Benson and Hood River Valley, with Thursam recording four touchdown catches and Collins making 13 grabs for 183 yards after spending all of last season at quarterback.
But the Vikings were shut out in a 14-0 loss to Tualatin. After entering the season with high expectations and a hungry senior class, the last thing Forest Grove wants is to open 0-2 in a loaded Pacific Conference.
"A lot of it was execution -- we just didn't play how we should have," Collins said of last week's loss. "We're feeling pretty good. We're coming off a hard loss, but we'll be fine."
